A relationship with Jesus Christ should be defined by worshipful adoration and reverence rather than a casual or "buddy" friendship. While mortals are initially called to be faithful servants who keep His commandments, Christ reserves the right to eventually invite those followers into a deeper relationship as His friends. Ultimately, by following the covenant path and relying on His grace and Atonement, individuals can find joy and receive the adoption of sonship as heirs of God.
